KAIUT - The Echoes of Stone & Wood
the artisan Petteri Jalkanen

For me, beautiful,

good sound

is the starting point of everything.

Thank you for visiting our site and a warm welcome!

I am Petteri, the artisan behind the Kaiut brand. I started on this challenging and positively compelling path because I was highly interested in the industry and I wanted to create something different with my hands. I am a maker by nature, and while I work, the world around me disappears. I get my inspiration from old-world blacksmiths and master craftsmen, whom I value immensely.

For me, beautiful, good sound is the starting point of everything. Since I had never experienced really pure sound, I started to design a speaker with exceptionally clear sounds. In 1991, I made speakers for the hi-fi convention in Helsinki, which were chosen as the convetion’s most positive product. Two pairs were ready at the time and both were sold right away.

I’ve always liked to walk a slightly rockier path and challenge myself to do unconventional things. I’ve often heard comments that something can’t be done, but that usually only motivates me to try harder. In this field, I can create new things, develop and refine the details to always be a bit better. When I start a work, for some reason I can see it with my soul’s eyes three-dimensionally in front of me, rotating it and changing the details.

Stone

Finnish black granite, like the “Black Pearl” I often use, is the most beautiful stone in the world in my eyes. When a completely seamless casing is carved out of it, an acoustically superior speaker is created. The sound is only allowed to come out of what it wants, and the stone does not roll at all. The sound does not come from the case, but from the speaker element. And the stone doesn’t lose its sound, it remembers. Every speaker that leaves my workshop is solid stone – no tiles or glue joints. This way, the sound is directed only where it needs to be.

Wood

Birch is the national tree of Finland. Its white´n´black bark is a very distinctive feature and easily steals attention in the forests of north. As material birch is a extremely hard tree and not very easy to be worked on but after the flame-treating the final result of the work is really rewarding and eye-catching. To give the wood also a better sound, there is always a stone heart hidden inside each speaker.

Uniqueness

I’m not a person who knows how to praise my own work, but my customers have told me that these are unique speakers by world standards, and I’m slowly starting to believe it myself. When the speaker is heavy, its sound is cleaner than you can imagine. The sound sounds clean, clear and full. When the Kaiut speaker is ready, it is listened to first and the sound must sound good – only then is it measured. With years of experience, I dare to say that technical perfection is not the same thing as the best sound.

When I got to know my current wife and played her music from the speakers I made, she started crying when she heard such a pure voice for the first time in her life. Similar stories have reached my ears from other places when people have heard the real sound of the stone for the first time.

Production

When I hear what a customer wants, I go out into nature to look for the right material. When a suitable stone or tree finally whispers to me, I carry it to my workshop. I make a design and also I choose the right components by hand, I carve the case and I create the details. Each Kaiut speaker is therefore only made by me. I also want to do my part to support global sustainable development, and that’s why I wanted to create an eternal loudspeaker. Each Kaiut speaker is unique, with a lifetime warranty on the housing and a ten-year warranty on the electrical components

North is inspiration, sound is emotion

Sit on solid rock in the Northern night, look at the starry sky in complete darkness, in the midst of unbroken, perfect and beautiful silence. At some point you will easily understand that the counterbalance of all this can only be a perfect sound. That sound, on the other hand, can already be an experience in its own right or help to complete some other experience.

From this joint symphony of silence and sound, the Echoes of Stone and Wood spread all over the world. How does Your Echo sound like?
